To be angry is an emotion expressed towards something or someone you feel has done you wrong. Angry in Chinese can be expressed as 愤怒 Fèn nù; 生气 shēng qì; 气恼 qì nǎo; 发火 fā huǒ; 动怒 dòng nù.

生气 is a Separable verb
What is a separable verb? A separable verb is the ability to separate into two parts – a verb part and an object part, with other words in between. For example,
他在生气 tā zài shēng qì
He is angry.
他在生自己的气 tā zài shēng zì jǐ de qì
He is angry at himself.
Different Chinese word in between 生气 shēng qì
Using a different Chinese word in between 生气 shēng qì will express a completely different meaning in Chinese.
- 他正生着气。tā zhèng shēng zhe qì. He is angry at the moment.
- 他生了一整天气。Tā shēng le yī zhěng tiān qì He has been angry all day.
- 他生过气。Tā shēng guò qì. He was angry.
- 他在生你的气。Tā zài shēng nǐ de qì. He is angry with you.
Using 生气 shēng qì to describe angry person
他已经生了半天气,到现在还没消。
tā yǐ jīng shēng le bàn tiān qì, dào xiàn zài hái méi xiāo.
He has been angry for half a day but still has not cool down yet.
The Chinese word 气 qì can also be placed before 生 shēng to describe a person who is angry.
等你气完了再跟你讲。
Děng nǐ qì wán liǎo zài gēn nǐ jiǎng.
I will talk to you after you are no longer angry.
How to describe an Angry appearance using 生气 shēng qì
他看起来很生气。tā kàn qǐ lái hěn shēng qì.
He appears to be very angry ( looks very angry is the predicate)
彼得生气的样子很吓人。Bǐdé shēng qì de yang zi hěn xià rén.
Peter’s angry look is very scary.
他一生气就像疯人似的。tā yī shēng qì jiù xiàng fēng rén shì de.
